We drove into Quebec city and found parking near the old town. We leashed the dogs and set off for a three-hour walking tour. We entered le vieux Quebec through one of the original city gates in the fortification wall and climbed up to the Citadel. From there we had a perfect view of the infamous Plains of Abraham (anyone remember their Canadian history??) on one side and the old city on the other. After climbing down we strolled along a street lined with old european-style houses to Chateau Frontenac where we mingled amongst the crowds on the boardwalk. The excavated foundations of Chateau Frontenac were exposed for interested tourists while the Fairmont hotel loomed overhead.
After returning to the van, we set off to Ste Anne de Beaupre, a pilgrimage destination. We admired the ornate basilica of Ste Anne inside and out. The lower level of the church was a chapel devoted to Ste Mary. We were surprised to discover that the chapel with abuzz with activity - apparently we had crashed the reception party of the inauguration of two new bishops. We were welcomed by one of the nuns distributing finger food. After explaining we had travelled all the way from BC, she extended us the hospitality of the sisterhood and offered the "weary travellers" food and drink.
