A short drive from Ottawa found us in Quebec for our first family visit. The youngest of Platon`s six brothers lives in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield - simply ``Valleyfield`` to the locals - about 60 km south of Montreal. It`s a lovely little Quebecois hamlet with quaint shops, church steeples, brick houses, and beautiful canals. There`s even a marina full of small sailboats. Waterfront homes in Valleyfield can be bought for a fraction of the cost of a condo in Vancouver. The weather was so lovely (mid-20`s and sunshine) that we enjoyed ice creams in an outdoor icecream parlor. Artemis has been perusing the local real estate listings and, satisfied with her findings, is looking for a job in Montreal so she might be able move here (we let her forget for the time being that it gets as cold as -40 in the dead of winter). We also met with our niece Lynne, who none of us had seen in 14 years. She`s all grown up and six-months pregnant with her first baby! As a nice departure from camp-style cooking in the van, I made use of a fully equipped kitchen to make an oven-baked a lasagna for dinner with strawberry pie for dessert (and threw all the dishes into the dishwasher when we were done!). We made plans to meet up with old friends who live in Montreal over the next few days.
